Social Security # not Yet cleared by INS

I just found out, when I went to social security office to change my name on my card that "the SS# has not been cleared by INS yet". The officer advised that this would take up to 12 weeks.

The thing is I have lived and worked in USA (legally) for almost 10 years. Does anyone know what that means "cleared", also what impact would this non clearance have on me getting GC in Frankfurt early April?

Any help or direction to find resources on this topic greatly appreciated

Why are you changing your name? Did you notify USCIS first? What is your status in US (visa type)? SSA uses SAVE (administered by USCIS) system to verify your status. If you are not on the system or your name doesn't agree, they will not process anything. I very much doubt that it will affect your interview. I was in the same boat. Eight years in States on H1 and recently got my DV Green Card
