Social security for children

hi

what options are available for kids of asylum applicants.

me and my wife applied for Employment authorization and waiting for decision

after we get it then we want to get social security and apply for health care

but what about 5 year old kid? how he gets insurance?

he is enrolled in school

Hi Journalist,

You should have applied for EAD for your baby too. The sole purpose for the Employment Authorization for the baby is not for employment but for documentation and in order to get a social security number. Once you have the social security number, you can use that to apply for insurance as well as to use during tax return. With the social security number you can also ask for government subsidies for your family. That is if in case you need it... My advice is, apply for him or her an EAD so as to get the social and the rest will fall in place. By the way, school enrollment in the states is free for all, irrespective of weather you are legal or illegal. But other benefits needs documentation.

Remember to send a copy of your EAD as proof and reference.

Hi Waz,
I never knew that you could apply EAD for minor children !
so even if they are only 7 years old, you could apply EAD for them?
Have you apply for your children?
what age is your children?
Thanks

Yes, you need to apply for EAD for your spouse and any other defendants who you included in your asylum application who are present in the US. Note that each family member living in the United States who is included on the applicant’s asylum application may submit an I-765. This means that even if the applicant’s child is not of legal age to work, an application may be filed on that child’s behalf so that she/he may get a social security number. That's the only way that the baby, will get a social security number. I have a 5 and a 10 year old. I applied for both of them.

The positive thing is that the small children do not need to go for finger print. But they still need to send their passport photo.

Hello Waz

How do you apply, who signs i-765? and where should you indicate that you are applying for child?

Hi Journalist, in my case my attorney advised us to write their name initials on the signature part of the I-765. Then rest was just direct and clear. We then wrote a letter head explaining what documents we had in the whole envelope that we had sent to USCIS. I received all the receipt numbers for all the applications I sent.

Hi you didn't write that application was filled by someone else, there is section in i-765 and you write there, so I believe i should write there something that I filled on behalf of my son

I had a lawyer help me fill out all the applications for my family, so he wrote that he helped fill all our applications. I guess if you are doing it on your own, then you will need to fill out that you filled in on behalf of your son.

Thanks Waz,
I just return from Post Office, mailing my children EAD application :)
but I did sent the application for my 2 children in 2 separate envelope though,
just to avoid confusion although I need to pay 2 USPS postage, but it is not that much.
I also did the same when I separate my application and my wife application in 2 different envelope (2 postage cost).
Let's see how fast the EAD for my children will be since they both past more than 230 days since USCIS received my asylum appliation back in April 2013...
Thanks again :)

Hello MWDW

Did you receive receipt notice of EAD for your children

I received it today saying that the case is under initial review.

So my and my wife's EADs were received on Nov 25 my kid's Dec 16

and difference between numbers are 16 000. 16 000 new applications were filed in such short time frame.

What's difference between your and your kids' application numbers?

I just check and
the difference between mine and the kids are around 14,000,
but remember this is EAD application from many states (not just our states),
plus it is not just for asylum related EAD but for other purposes too.

Hi MWDW

It is very wierd but today I received e-mail notification that my son's EAD was approved and status is changed to card production.

Me and my wife submitted our EADs almost 1 month ago and didn't receive any update so far and my son's was decided even in less than 30 day. Anyway this looks promising as far as all of our EAD applications are the same and so there mustn't be any delay in our applications and I will make insurance for my son as soon as I get SS for him.

What about yours?

Hehe now they changed Card production status to Post decision activity, I think it is the same thing, I will receive decision and then card? Or I must apply in local social security office?
