Social Security Cards

I still have my old SSN from when I was on a J1 for 6 months back in 01/02.

When I filled out my forms in the first package I ticked that I did not require another number (or whatever the question was about SSN)

Question is - can I still use the old card from back then seeing as I will keep the same number? Or do I have to apply for a replacement 'new' card with my old number?

Thanks a bunch!

U can still use thesame card that has " not for empoyment unless dhs autorization" or something like that. I'll suggest that u go get a replacement from social security so that u don't have to be asked a whole bunch of questions every time you show ur social security card to someone.

you should, but you don't have to.

I will be applying for citizenship this summer, but I just never got to changing the SSN card.... I guess I'll do it after I become a citizen. :)

I went to SS office today. They told me that you should indeed inform them when your status changes (e.g. to a permanent resident). Even if you don't need to order a new card (I did not order a new one, since my old one did not have any restrictions printed on it) the officer told me that technically you need to inform them of your new status. I had her print out a letter, saying that I was there to inform them of my status change. Just in case, you never know.
