Hello,

I can't seem to find a straight answer on this, hopefully someone can help.

I am a citizen, recently applied green cards for my parents (concurrent filing of 130 and 485). They have just received the green cards.

My question is, how do they get social security card?

thanks.

Hi LucyMo. Thanks. Besides foreign passport, and the new green card, do they need any other documents? and they don't really speak english, is there forms that I can download and pre-fill for them?

Thank you fromnaija

Just curious, could i have applied for this together when I filed the 130 and 485? Maybe future filers can just do it together?

I have assumed that once my parents receive green card, social security card will follow automatically after. I was wrong.

OP, the USCIS and the Social Security Administration are separate government agencies, therefore I don't think any forms would exist that you can send to USCIS to apply for a social security card. It would be similar to sending your federal tax return to the Pentagon and hoping it'll get to the right place. :)

However, you can look on Pg. 26 of the Welcome Guide, it explains how to get an SSN and how to get one if you don't speak English. The Welcome Guide is available at uscis.gov in 10 languages, maybe one that your parents understand too?

DS-230 has a place which you can check to apply for SSN, but many still don't get an SSN automatically. Of course, DS-230 is sent to DOS, not USCIS, so austriacus is absolutely correct.

Thanks for this info LucyMO, I see it on the DS-230 indeed. If this actually works for someone, I would consider this a very high level of intergovernmental cooperation!

"If you are issued an immigrant visa and are subsequently admitted to the United States as an immigrant, the Department of Homeland Security will use the information on this form to issue you a Permanent Resident Card, and, if you so indicate, the Social Security Administration will use the information to issue you a social security number and card."

"CONSENT TO DISCLOSURE: I authorize disclosure of information from this form to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Social Security Administration (SSA), such other U.S. Government agencies as may be required for the purpose of assigning me an SSN and issuing me a Social Security card, and I authorize the SSA to share my SSN with the INS."

So they can do this, but they can't work together to make immigrant numbers available in intervals that don't cause mass confusion? I also find it interesting that State still calls the USCIS "INS" on their forms ... even though they got the newly created DHS correct in the same statement. :D
