Hi,

I am going to Canada as Permanent Resedence from USA next month (Dec 2003). One of my papers, it says that,

" Te immigration officer at the Port of Entry will also begin the the process of PR and Social Insurance Number for employment purposes"

Based on this infomraiton I am planning to land in Canada and get back to USA during the weekend. I will be flying to Canada Friday night and will be back on Sunday.

Now, after reading this forum, I get the idea that I will have to apply SIN going to the office during business day. I just want to make sure that if this is changed since one of my paper says that it will be applied at Port of Entry. If not, I may need to change my ticket so that I can leave after applying the SIN on a working day.

Is there anyone who recently landed to Canada and can give me up-to-date information about this. Any information will be highly appreciated.

Thank you.

--------- Don’t surrender your I-94 while leaving US as flight to Canada is treated as domestic flight and you can enter with sameI-94, at the time of landing the officer is going to stamp your passport and enter info in computer and you will also sign the form for PR card at the time of landing. Make sure he takes your Photographs for PR card or ask him if they will use the Photo that they have. You should provide Canada address for PR card as Card can be sent my mail to Canada address and once your relative/friend receives he can mail it to you in USA. SIN card you have to apply visiting HRDC office I don’t think you can do that as on Saturday and Sunday HRDC is closed

-------------- If you want to apply for SIN then change the date, SIN card is only for work or for tax purpose it has nothing to do with your PR card or PR status. At the time of landing when you exit the landing officer then at the gate you may pick up SIN application form or a lady will give you 2-3 booklets regarding Canada for general reding and SIN application form. If you want to apply SIN next time no problem, HRDC office has SIN application forms you can pick one from any HRDC office

Thank you for the information. I will stay couple more days and apply the SIN and come back.

(1) I will re-enter USA using paroll. I can just come back using same I-94 and can stay H-1b. But I do not see any benefit staying in H1-b. Rather, I should just use my paroll.

Is there any good/bad using paroll vs. staying H1-B?

(2) I was also thinking to apply Health card. (I am going Toronto). I was reading that Ontario has 3 months waiting period before I can apply Health card.

It would be easier for me if I do not have to go after 3/6 months to apply for Health card again...

Any tips?

-------- You can enter with same I-94 on H1b status or can show Advance Parle
Is there any good/bad using paroll vs. staying H1-B?
------ one can be on H1 status even if you enter with Advance parole AND work with the same employer who sponsored your latest H1 , many prefer to maintain H1 status because if I-485 is denied due to any reason one can stay and work on H1 and can keep extending the H1 if LC filed 365 days back or I-140 pending or I-485 pending

--------- you will NOT get Ontario Health card, they give you card only after 3 months of landing AND you need to provide them your Canada apartment Rental agreement, Telephone, Cable bill, running Canada bank account and Canada DL, search the document for OHIP through google

Thank you again for the information.

(1) When I go the the Canadian Airport, do I have to fill up any custom forms for goods that I will be taking with me?

(2) Also, do I have to fill up any forms for currency declaration if I carry more than $10,000.00 ?

Do I have fill up when I am there or I can get the forms and do all the work beforehand and just hand in when I get there. Do I face custom first before talking to an immigration officers.

Thanks.

(1) When I go the the Canadian Airport, do I have to fill up any custom forms for goods that I will be taking with me?
------ When you land at Canada airport you will first face Canada customs when they see that you have to complete landing formalities they will direct you to that area. After completing the landing you will come to pick up your baggage then again you will face the Canada custom officer and you will present him the list of” GOODS with you” and goods to follow” list keep 2 copies of godds to follow list with you and the officer will keep one copy and will stamp the other copy that you should keep with you
(2) Also, do I have to fill up any forms for currency declaration if I carry more than $10,000.00 ?
------ In the flight you will be provided Custom form and declare the amount if it more than 10K on it
Do I have fill up when I am there or I can get the forms and do all the work beforehand and just hand in when I get there. Do I face custom first before talking to an immigration officers

Will you please explain what do you mean by 'List keep 2 copies of goods'?

Do you mean that I just list of my goods (2 copies) in the 2 forms? Or, shall I just print out 2 copies of my goods in a plain paper when I leave.

My wife will be with me. I will have two cashier's check, one for me and one for my wife's name? Do I have to fill up two different forms for my wife my myself or just one copy.

Thanks.

----- Print out 2 copies of “Goods to Follow” write the name of each goods and value in CDN or USD at the time you inform that value of goods to follow is in USD. You need also 2 copies of Goods with you.

-----each have to fill up the custom form that will be given by airlines, if any confusion they will help you or the custom officer at airport will help you.

Thank you for all the information.

I do not have any 'Goods to follow' since nothing will go to Canada by postal mail. Do I still give them 'Goods to follow' list?

Thanks.

I do not have any 'Goods to follow' since nothing will go to Canada by postal mail.
----- This is the list of goods that you can bring to Canada later duty free by Car or by air and custom will not charge anything later if you get Goods to follow list stamped at time of landing

Do I still give them 'Goods to follow' list?
---- That is up to you, normally they expect that if some one is landing and want to reside permanently in Canada he/she will have goods to follow list. If you don’t have to take anything in future then it is up to you nobody isforcing you to bring goods to follow list
