So Help Me God

I don't want to start a debate on religion or separation of church and state...

I was told in my interview that federal law prohibits any amendments to the citizenship oath. I *KNOW* that folks on here had had their oaths amended to work with their chosen religion - what is the section of law that specifically allows for the omission of 'So Help Me God'?

The examiner said that even if I am not Christian, I should have to say SoHelpMeGod because many religions believe in some kind of god...

God is not Christians sole property. God is everyone's property. Religions call this God by different names to divide humans and create rifts and enemity so that the DIVIDERs can make a killing.

So the WISE will stay away from such GIMMICKs.

Nothing in the constitution or the US Dollar Bill mentions anything about Christianity. So saying "So Help Me God" has nothing to do with Christianity.

So based on my initial premise it is Universal to all religions. Thus, if you believe in "God" you should NOT have any problems.

I very STRONGLY feel the FOUNDING FATHERs of this country were SMARTER and FARsigthed and INTELLIGENT than any of us (that includes me).

Look, I am an atheist and therefore I am really not bothered by the "So help me god" addition. I actually just did not say the last sentence out loud .... I would however not bother to pick a fight about it during the naturalization process - your citizenship is not about your religion, or the lack of it. To me it makes the difference of a drop of water in the ocean. If you get too exited about the references to religion, you'll have a hard time when you raise your kids. We let them be exposed to religion(s) and explain how we see this issue and why religion does not make sense for us personally.
It is a fact that the majority of the US citizens is very, very religious, especially compare to my native country. That's how you get elected and how you get soldiers in a war to risk their lives, kill and get killed - all with 'God on their side'. The words 'Religion is Opium for the people' is true in many ways (to me) ...

Like I said; I don't want to start a debate on religion. I won't respond to any discussion on religion - this is not out of disrespect, I just want this thread to stay on track... This thread is just about immigration policy and law.

JoeF... Thanks for the cite!

I am not going to make this into a fight. It's more of a commentary on how different offices have different rules (or are not aware of the rules) so as a warning to future interviewees, take a copy of this section of law if you want to omit SHMG.
