As the title suggests, how many of you actually carry the greencard with you at alll times? Not a copy, but the ORIGINAL.

If you carry a copy, please state so.

Me: I carry a copy ONLY. Original safely filed away with passport and other documents.

How many threads must we have asking the same question?
it's like snake with umpteen no. of heads. Each time you slash one head,it resurfaces with another head from umpteen ;) .
OK.Basically this shows the people are not really happy of the law (if it is saying carry GC at all times 24*7*52) and try to vent out their displeasure this way (which is the only way) ;)

I don't think any person would be happy to carry a piece of document to prove who he is and what he is. That's why citizens don't need to carry any document. Unfortunaitely aliens don't have the same privilege.

people we are not a police state

we don't have checkpoints every few yards.

If you don't want to carry it around with you then don't

The law basically means have it someplace where you can get to it at any time.

Also have it with you when you go to government offices or travel out of the country.

In the last thread I concluded that let it be a preference to everyone. If carrying it with you everywhere keeps you from losing it then go right ahead.

My wife chose not to carry it around at all but she will have it when we travel overseas. It is kept in a safe place that she can get to quickly and easily.

Chips instead

If law says 24*7*52 and implementation is strictly as per the letter of the law,one possible solution is to let all of us(GCAliens) form an association and request CIS to provide a CHIP instead of Plastic card. This chip can be implanted peramanently under the skin of fore arm or any convevient place like RFID. ;) .
This serves two things:24*7*52 law and no fear of losing GC .Other advantage is just you can be scanned even not asking you for a stop. ;)

And it will also streamline the processing of your identification, just like any commodity product at Wal-Mart.

What do you do once you naturalize and take the oath? Schedule another appointment to get the CHIP removed...

No separate appointment. This to be better provided at after the oath .
And not for chip removal, but for erasing the data and making chip redundant and passive. This can be achieved by subjecting the chip to High magentic field in the order of 1 to 2 tesla strength, for example ;)

What do you do when you go swimming....do you keep the copy with you, or in a locker.
No fear.See post #9.If adapted, You can do whatever swim, surf, snorkel,Dive with out fear of loosing GC. ;)

Those with long memories will recall the texas raid incident where colored people without proof of status ended up spending night in a slammer.

So my opinion is that you'll live if you don't carry your GC, but there are times and situations where having it on you can make your life much easier.

It's similar to having some id on you. If a cop catches you for misbehaving at say, 1am, and you don't have an id, off you'll go into the slammer for a night.

You don't *need* to have an id, but not having one could cause you inconvenience.

I prefer the Christopher Walken mechanism (a la Pulp Fiction) myself.
No problem.Options/deviations may be allowed.(however if you can maintain 24*7*52 law compliance in any manner. ;)

Also, be careful, so that it does not get flushed accidentally (especially in plane, when you are flying internationally).

Once an Alien - Always an Alien

Perhaps you all know - The 'Alien #' (A#) is present even when one becomes Citizen afret the GC. It will printed in the Naturalization Certificate.

Does this mean to prove our immigartion status, we need to carry the Naturalization Certificate too?

Your naturalization is based on that A#. Otherwise, there is no significance of that number in naturalization certificate.

No, because you are not "immigrant" anymore. You need to carry/show it only when it is required by you.
