SIL request form: "status at time of entry"

I am filling out the Request for Status Information Letter from the Selective Service System. In Section 2, under the heading "NON CITIZEN / ALIEN," I am trying to fill in the following blank:
USCIS (Formerly INS) status at time of entry: ______________

What should I put there? I have a Green Card (Form 551, 1977) which classes me as SD1. But I'm not quite sure what to put in that blank. Here is what I came up with, but I don't know if any of these is correct:

1. lawful permanent resident
2. legal non-citizen immigrant
3. SD1

Any ideas?

P.S. I tried to search the forums for this information, but the search routine does not seem to support phrase matches. Any help on that would be appreciated, too.

Did you get your GC prior to entering the US? Or did you come to this country on a visa (student - F1, visitor - B1/2, occupation - H1...) and then later applied and got the GC? If it is the former, then I would put down Lawful Permanent Resident. If the latter, then it would be the appropriate visa category. Just my two cents!

It is requesting your status the first time you entered the US. If you entered the first time on a SD1 (religious member) GC, then the status would be LPR.

Btw, the instructions are on the SS website:

I put it as "H1B" -- ( i got the SS letter after 2 months -- )

Thanks everyone for the reply.

^indiemocha - I actually entered with the permanent residence visa all in place.

^bobsmyth - I think you are right about LPR; that was my first instinct, too. Believe me, I read through the SSS instructions, and they don't give much guidance for this particular part of the form. "Status," it seems to me, is a term of art that means different things in different contexts, hence the confusion.

I've got a feeling the exact entry is not going to matter all that much. But I'm going to send this form off with "lawful permanent resident" as my answer, and come back here with a report if there were any problems.

BTW, somewhat off topic, my motivation for becoming naturalized was pushed by a recent experience I had at the BMV. The person behind the counter had all sorts of trouble figuring out the validity of my ancient Green Card. The lack of an expiration date really threw her. You can write it off to incompetence on her part, but I have had several similar experiences like this in recent years. After 23 years in this country, it's time to get the old naturalization ball rolling.

I really appreciate this forum.

Or to apply for a GC with an expiration date.;)
