Should I apply for H4 visa?

Hi,

I was on H1 status till the end of Aug 2007 and later I quit my job on a temporary basis (for ~6 months) and my H1 with that company is good until Nov 2008. I got my EAD through my husband and our GC is under processing. If I want to keep my H status valid, do i have to apply for H4 now? If i don't do that, will my H-status be gone? Your inputs on this will' really help me. THanks.
 
As a back up, transfer your H1 to h4 keep that status until your I 485 gets approved.
