Selective Service

I moved from the UK to Virginia when I was 24 years old. I did not know that I was to register for selective service until I started looking at getting my citizenship 12 years later. Is this going to be a issue when I apply for citizenship? What steps can I take?

When did you obtain your green card? Was it when you moved to the US at age 24? Or did you first come to the US at 24 with a student visa or work visa, and obtained the green card years later?

Depending on your answers, it's possible they have already registered you automatically or you weren't required to register.

What was your status when you came?

So presumably you applied for and received your green card at 24 or 25, which means you were required to register.

At least 10 years ago, the INS started automatically registering male applicants as part of the green card process. Yours was a bit more than 10 years ago, so I don't know if your green card was before or after they started doing that.

You can check your status at https://www.sss.gov/RegVer/wfVerification.aspx to see if you were registered. However, that web site does not have complete access to all records, so sometimes it fails to find the registration for some people who actually registered. If the web site doesn't confirm your registration, call them to ask about your registration status.

If the people on the phone say you're not registered, don't worry about it; it is largely irrelevant once you turn 31.
