Gurus,

I am preparing documents to apply for my citizenship and I have a question with respect to including Selective Service Status Letter in N400 package.

Here is my details:

Age 21 - came to US on F1 visa
Age 21-23 - On F1 Visa
Age 24-27 - On H1 Visa
Got my green card immediately after my 27th birthday.

Do I need to include the Selective Service Letter in the application package? I have gone over the forum sticky(s), but very confused about the timeline and non-immigration visa conditions.

Please help.

Thanks,
Sayam

Get a Status information letter from the Selective Service stating why you did not register{i.e you are out of the age requirement}. Answer "NO", explain and attach a copy of the "Status information letter" with your form {N-400}. Here is thier website:-

http://www.sss.gov/instructions.html

Good luck.

One more important thing. Your age on the date the greencard was issued {as stated on the GC}. e.g if you will be 26 and the issue date is before your 26th birthday you need to register for Selective service , but if you were 26 before the issue date you are straight. All you need is the "Status information letter".

Where were you between the age of 23-24, and in what visa status? i.e. Did you go out of status between being on the F1 and gaining H1?

The simplest approach is to apply for a status letter. The selective service folks may want a bunch of paperwork for proof, but it'll help out when you go for your N-400 interview.
