Selective Service - Should I have registered?

Friends,

I got my green card on Feb/2003.

Between March/1999 and Feb/2003 I was on a H1B, always legal, never out of status.

I turned 26 years old in April of 2000 while in my H1B.
Was I ever required to registered with Selective Service?

My understanding from reading different articles is that only illegal aliens are required to do so (which sounds really strange to me!). I just want to make sure I will be alright when applying for Citizenship in 3 years.

Thanks,

Suresh

JoeF -

In the item number 10 of the Naturalization Eligibility Worksheet the one that applies to me is:

"I am a male who was in the United States between the ages of 18 and 26 but who did not register with the Selective Service, and I will send a “Status Information Letter” from the Selective Service explaining why with my application."

Do I need to contact Selective Service?
Is this a pretty straight forward process?

Thanks,

Suresh

Suresh,

Check their site www.sss.gov or give them a call as I did. Fill out a form and send it to them, basically explaining your status in this country, attach your I-94 or H1B papers. They will send you a form stating that you were not required to register with Selective Service.
Do not lose sleep over it, since you did not do anything wrong.
