Either way you may end up requesting a Status Information Letter from the Selective Services System (which may indicate that you are required to register but did not register. More info at sss.gov). Beyond that you need to explain why you did not register with SSS to the requesting agency (e.g. USCIS). The requesting agency has the right to decide to approve or deny the benefit you apply for...

BTW - This is only applicable to a male.

fitness , thank you .... my question is how is INS acting when you have a reasonable explanation .. that being that u had no idea or nobody inform that you have to register .. thanx....

Clisp - I have no first hand experience in this issue with USCIS (as I was not required to register, and have a letter for SSS stating that). It is purely at the discretion of the USCIS officer overseeing your case. It may be a good idea to consult with an attorney to understand how this impacts your particular situation.

If you dont register you need to get a letter from SSS saying so. In general if all other things are ok and if not registering was a genuine oversight most interviewers might let it pass, especially since there was no draft in the recent past.. But if you live in the Seattle DO for instance, then .......

Thanks Rahul.

In my case, then I dont need to register. But should I get the exempt letter from SSS now or at the time of filing for USC?

Call SSS cust service they are usually helpful , they can give you a letter saying you were not required to register. Get it before your interview (Dont need it though)

Does the rule of 26 and above applies at the time of you got GC or does it apply at the time you entered in US...
I mean someone can enter in US at age 25 on H1/F1 status and got GC at age 30. Would he be required to register ?
Thanks in advance...

Applies to Lawful permanant resident and ILLEGAL aliens only. No F1/H1/B1/L1 etc.. If you are a visitor to this country, you dont require to pledge to bear arms for the US!
