I have written a letter to the SSS folks about my details. In that I have written why I did not register. It goes like this. Try to poke holes into this

I was not aware, till recently, that a Federal agency called the Selective Service System was present. Once I became aware I read on the website of the Selective Service System and found that I was not required to register if I was lawful non immigrant until the age of 26 years. I was indeed a lawful non immigrant student on F-1 status, between 24 years of age and 27 years of age from Aug 1992 to May 1995. Hence I did not register. Tehe following documents are attached to demonstrate that I was a lawful non immigrant F1 student from 24 years of age to 27 years of age.

Now my question is,

Is it ok to say that I was not aware till recenlty that a Federal agency called the Selective Service system was present.

Why do you have to state at all that you were not aware of the existence of SSS?

Why can't you can simply provide the docs which you mentioned as proof and ask for a doc stating that you were/are exempt from registering (and avoid including that statement?)

No need to profess ignorance of SSS. Just say and provide proof that you were a legal non-immigrant until your 26th birthday.

BTW, I think the paperwork that comes with your greencard states that you are required to register with the SSS if you are under 26.

totally agree. just mention you are non-immigrant before 26 and provide all supported documents.

Here is my experience with SSS.

i mailed SSS recently and left my cell phone on the cover letter. (I was F1/H1b before 26 years old.)

About 4 business days later, a lady from SSS called my cell and confirmed i requested for SSS letter. she then asked the date i entered US the first time and told me i put a wrong date for that on my letter. (I checked my soft copy later, there was no error with the date. no idea what's going). Anyway she told me everything should be ok and I will get their letter in a few weeks.
