Make a search at the forum on "name check" (only titles) - you will find several
excellent threads. I liked the best the one by Rahul Kumar (I might have misspelled his name). The last posting in his thread was on august 17, so it may be not on the first page of your search results. Most of the guys who posted there are from the Naturalization forum (they also need name checks now). Actually I just did it for you:

You can also make a search on my name (fine&jadwin) and find my previous posting on this topic (in mid July), but it is much less informative than Kumar's. You may also want to search the congressional testimony of the special agent Garrity on name checks
(you can find one in my July's posting)
I was in the same boat untill today. My name check has been pending since Jan 6, 2003.
Only today I received an e-mail from the FBi that the name check is completed.
The name check for my wife was completed on jan 12, 2003 (just in six days).
I am a Russian with a not very common last name, but I was interviewd by FBI twice before even my name chec was requested - it seems that there is a person with the same last name who was of interest to the FBI. needless to say that I have an excellent personal and professional reputation in the US where I have lived since 1993.
My two cents: if you have a compelling personal story- write it to David Hardy (the guy in charge of the Records/Information Dissemination Section) or to his boss William L Hooton
(Assistant Director, Records Management Division). The abovementioned Robert(?) J. Garrity Jr is the Deputy Assistant Director at the same division. Read carefully Kumar's instructions - it could help, even though I made it through on my own. If you are lucky,
your local congressman could help- did not happen (it seems) in my case. I also wrote to both Senators just a few days ago- I doubt that they even read my letters. I did not receive an aknowledgment. I believe that in my case the difference made my personal letters written to the FBI. At least the todays' e-mail referred to my "most recent letter".
Good luck.
P.S. You MUST read Kumar's thread-believe me
