While filling in my N-400 application, in the general questions section 10, it asks if you have ever claimed to be a U.S. Citizen. All of the sudden, all of the mortgages, loans, 401K's etc, investments came to mind-I do not really remember there being a question about whether you are a citizen or not on loan or mortgage applications, but whenever i filled in any l-9's or tax stuff it's always been res alien that I answered.

Being that I never really look (especially Mortgage docs, titles) you just sign this massive pile of papers in front of you. I do not know how to answer this, I know that I have never intentionally claimed to be a citizen, but now I worry that something will come up that I didn't even realise I in some kind of check during the process of the N-400 , any suggestions on this would be appreciated.

If you don't remember that you ever claimed to be a USC, then chances are you NEVER did! I won't worry about it too much. Its mostly for people, who claimed to be a USC to gain some benefits.

BTW, nobody ever goes thru every line when signing the mortgage docs and yes everyone hopes that they signed the "regular" mumbo-jumbo stuff.

Thanks so much for your response. I am now looking for what I thought I had seen as part of a mortgage doc which asks the question, I believe that we may have signed it when the usc box was checked, it makes me nervous since the penalty for this seems to be so harsh. Obviously, we would have nothing to gain by checking that box since permanent residents have the exact same right to have a mortgage. But still if it's true it would worry me. for people who think that they may have made a similar mistake it's a daunting feeling, you work so hard to build a life, raise a family, model resident, create jobs, pay tons of tax and something like that can wipe it out.

its innocent entirely, but it depends on how the dept looks at it i guess, did you read somewhere that its especially for gov benefits?

Unless you ever did anything silly like saying you were a USC to get a federal job or vote in an election, stop trying so hard to make your life difficult! Sounds like you never knowingly did any of this, so the correct answer is "no". Move on.

Be prepared to answer the question with a straight face, because it is very likely that the interviewer will look you in the eye and ask you this question. I am not scaring you, but presenting a scenario that you need to be ready for.

That said, the intention here is to find out if any one falsely claimed to be a USC for benefits such as voting, federal government jobs, US passport etc - matters which are the exclusively for USCs.

Most federal forms have a USC/Permanent resident question. Older forms may have had just USC, now it is more like are you a legal resident. But guess what 12 million illegal aliens too have signed it to get home loans, car leases etc etc.

I don't think you should be worrying about some financial form and feel guilty for no reason. The intent of the question is not what you think.

Thank you all so much for responding, I do feel much better now. I am fairly detail oriented so this would drive OCD people like me nuts. I find that this forum is very informative and a wonderful source of information. Again...THANKS!
