Hi, Guys,

I got a sealed recommendation letter for my NIW from a very famous professor since he wanted the letter with confidential. But, in his email he said that he strongly supports my application. The original draft of the letter was written by me. I did not know how he modified it. Does anybody meet similar situation? Can I submit his sealed letter with other support documments to USCIS? I am preparing NIW by DIY way. I am very much apprecitive of your suggestions?

None of my letters were sealed. I do not think the letters have to be sealed......but lets see what everyone else has to say about it?

None of my letetrs were sealed. I have heard even email prints as letters got approved. I think there is a risk of sending the letter without opening it. However if he mentioned in the letter that he wanted to be sealed than you may not want to to send it. But I would still open it. That is my opinion of course.

thanks a lot. But...

Thanks so much for your reply. But the professor does not want me to open it. I am hesitating to open it. From his email, it seems that he would strongly support my application.

the letters need not have to be sealed.

did he said that?
if yes, two choice
1. don't use the letter
2. Tell him that u need not have to send sealed so u need to open it

I don't think you should send this letter at all without opening it. Anyway, when you prepare a cover letter, you might want to write a couple of high points from this letter, which you can not do without opening it. If the professor explicitly says not to open it, then you shouldn't open it, and in that case just don't send this letter.

letter should be opened and arranged according to your exhibits. make some copies of the letters too for your records. you read the letter and feel what he said about you before the immigration officer reads his/her letter. do not trust anybody what they say in the sealed envolpe. double check everything the way you want before sending to USCIS.good luck.

Anyways how would he know whether you sent it open or not....and if he was so interested in not revealing the contents the ideal way for a recco letter is to be sent directly to the USCIS....this letter is not for a job interview or a admission....now that the letter is with you its your property as far as I can tell and you can do what yu please with it....I would say dont waste a recco letter....open it and send it if its good....every letter counts I think

May be the first time!

I think that professor is living still in the 60's or much backward, This is a modern world not much secrets, even job interviewers tells what type of reco letter they got from your references. There is no secret in this reco letters and I feel that you open it and read, find something negative, through it in the dust bin,if not send it. If you have a bad rec letter that is going to create the case worse, so be careful.
good luck

Very much appreciate all of you

Thanks so much for your suggestions.

Actually the professor sent a sealed letter to USCIS. I told him that I have to collection all support documents, then he sent me a copy (with seale). The letter is still in my desk and I did not open it since I promised the professor. But yesterday everning, when I check the envelop of the letter. The first page of the recommendation letter can be read thought it is very difficult to read throught the cover of the envelop. The original draft was written by me. The professor did some modifications. It seems that he made the draft stronger. For example, I drafted as "I was very much impressed by this work", he changed to "I was quite impressed by the originality and scitific importance of this work". Here I write the first three paragraphs what is in the first pape. I feel the letter is strong. So the question is, can I submit this sealed letter to USCIS? I have other 6 letters to be cited in my cover letter. Thanks so much!

This is the first three paragraphs.

"Please accept my independent recommendation in support Dr. XX's application for permanent residency status in the United States. In my opinion, Dr. XX's exceptional quality as a scientist should allow him exemption from the usual job offer and labor certificate requirement. I strongly recommend that he be granted permanent residency with a national interest waiver because his talent and ability available to our country.

I would like to describe some of Dr. XX’s accomplishments and contributions to xxxx science.

In conference 2006, the head of xx insitute reported significant findings on ‘rearch xxxx’ that were primarily based on Dr. XX’s work which he performed during his association with the group. I was quite impressed by the originality and scientific importance of this work, and as a result became familiar with Dr. XX’s research. ...."

How is the USCIS going to know whose letter that is....it does not have an identifying number on it? Isnt all the documents to be sent together? As far as I know documents cannot be sent piecemeal....from what I can envision is that letter is prolly lost in the sea of unwanted documents at USCIS.....lol....so you may actually have to send the letter to USCIS again....Where did the professor learn to send letters directly to USCIS???? You should have sent an explaination or sumthing explainign him the entire procedure....maybe one letter from your lawyer.....

1. its very important to know the contents.......every line of it.....you dont want a red flag anywhere..

2. you do need to quote from the letter..

3. things can be explained to the professor....that you need to draft a cover letter citing his reco......i know its difficult with these academic people living in their own victorian world.....but give it a try.....after all if he says no.....you can then analyze your options...

i do agree that every reco is important.....but once you have 7-8, with 4-5 good ones.....one can be sacrificed for sake of sanity...

The letter that was sent to USCIS on your behalf will never reach the person who will adjudicate your petition. USCIS clearly wants all supporting evidence for your petition to be contained and sent in only one submission package. USCIS wants the format of your petition to be 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of paper, printed on one side only, and attached all together by a binding across the top of the page. You need to remove the letter from the envelope and put it in your submission package with all the other letters. USCIS does not like having to deal with any kinds of extra work with these petitions, so make it as easy as possible for them bu having the letter out of the envelope, or else you run the risk that they will not open the envelope. Also in your petition you should make reference to the support letters and the content in them. if you don't open the envelope, you can't do this. OPEN THE ENVELOPE.
