Sorry to tell you Papoo but you missed the point on both issues.
1. Regarding the once a pakistani always a pakistani remark, you probably din't understand the meaning and flamed grass for the sake of flaming. What he meant by it is that it doesn't matter what your citizenship is, what matters is your place of birth, hence the statement "once a pakistani always a pakistani". Sure we need to be sensitive of other people's ethnicity and beliefs but don't take politically correct speach to the extent that you lose your sense of prespective.
2. As far as the campaign to canvas public opinion is concerned, you are dead wrong, why the hell do you think 245(i) Life act was passed? Is it that those illegal immigrants can vote? No it is because the policitican always looks to the next election. He wants to get voted back in office, it takes 5 years after you are a permanant resident that you can vote and who will you vote once you get the opportunity? Yes that is right, "THE PERSON WHO GAVE YOU THAT RIGHT TO VOTE". It is a well know fact that there is no believer like the converted believer. Immigrants who receive their citizenship are more likely to vote by a factor of almost 60 % than citizens born with the right to vote. Hence our voice counts. Sitting on our asses saying "we are screwed" helps no one and yes you will be screwed. Atleast voicing your opinion gives you a channel to vent your frustration. And gives you a positive chance to achieve your goals. I would rather fight and go down fighting rather than turn over and offer my ass since they will get around to it in any case.
We all know we are in a bad shape but I think we will succeed, because like Silly Man said, without immigrants the economy engine will not run, who is going to develop technology for missle defence, who is going to pay taxes to pay for the same?

Guys and Gals cool it down
99% of ppl are legal here through out there stay so its just matter of time , may be insted of one yr it will go to 2 yr till we get our GC. Even ppl from countries who hv to register legaly willnot have any problem if they are totaly legal here during there stay. I guess only illeagal ppl have to pay the price but question should be asked whynot from every country . But thats the way this govt. sees it after sept 11.
IF they want all the non immigrats ppl to leave , guess what will happen to America . Most of high tech jobs are done by H1 persons or L1. They will create such a void that America will not be able to stand up gain and compnies like microsoft , oracle , and sun might hv to shut down Us oprations. I think right now Govt. is doing things in the heat of Sept 11 but sooner or later they will realise there mistakes. SO just wait and chill and i f they continue to arrest ppl like it then i think no one will come forward to register except who are legally here throughout there stay.

As you will notice in the above sentence, I make no mention of the fact that "you will be screwed" while sitting. That leaves a number of possibilities open. Offcourse I am no expert but common sense dictates that the possible ways are :
1. The chair you are sitting on is so designed to allow this to happen. (imagine your wc).
2. INS finds you sitting, lifts you and has its crummy way with you.
etc. etc.

Ghost rider, thanks to cumbersome immigration laws, the void already exists. Companies that you mentioned, all of them today employ and invest more money in India than they do in America. That includes college grants. The government is just stupid and insensitive to the real needs of the industry, as they have always been. The reason capitalism works is that the government doesn't interfere with private enterprise. Whenever they bend those rules, they screw it up.
Thats what they are doing now, screwing it up, and we are going to take the brunt of it, just like the US high tech industry, and yea the government's historically have never changed anything until there is a revolution. Arguably, revolutions have been counterproductive in many cases.
But yea, we are a group of lucky son of a bitches, born in India in the 1970's gives us a de facto reputation of being a tech wizard. If everything screws up, just go to bangalore/hyderabad/shanghai and take up a job with one of these companies there. You'd be doing great work and probably saving more money than here in another 10 years.

Do't u worry SM , I think u been in this country to know how things move here , At there own place . Things will change but at there Pace. check out the News of NJ senate they passed a bill 40-0 to prevent foreign call centers call to the state . Sooner or later govt have to come in pictue or PPL here will suffer.
Yeh we guys are of different breed we hv learnt things in a hard way from india so for us it does't matter if they can't keep us here we can easily go back to india for some good offer or some other county. But with my expreience compnies here cannot replace us for kind of work we do here they also know that.That's the reason AC21 was passed by Govt. and main pusher of those bills were microsoft sun and oracle. Chair or no chair you know what the ultimate result will be if the INS Gods dont pick your file in time. As far as I go, it doesnt matter to me, as they say if you can make it in this country you can make it anywhere. I am not losing any sleep over that, its just that the wait is frustrating.

Guys I got a FREE CARD OUT OF JAIL (AS DID MY WHOLE FAMILY).
I talked to a (different) respected attorney today, and we explained to her that all of us had abandoned our Pakistani passports a long time ago (when we became Swedish citizens).
She said we have nothing to worry about because this does not apply to us anymore.
I just hope the people who are not as lucky as me, also find a safe route out of this crap.

I talked to a (different) respected attorney today, and we explained to her that all of us had abandoned our Pakistani passports a long time ago (when we became Swedish citizens).
She said we have nothing to worry about because this does not apply to us anymore.
I just hope the people who are not as lucky as me, also find a safe route out of this crap.

I came to the US legally because they invited my to spend my hard earned foreign currency in US education as an F1 student. Then I stayed here because they made me job offers and the government told me that it is legal to work here for 6 years on H1B. The government told me also that if I want to stay here forever, I can apply for permanent residency. They gave me all these avenues as options and opportunities.
So I find it BS if they want to kick me out now. Why invite me in the first place? If I had known that I wasn't wanted here, would I REALLY have spent 6 years of my life contributing to their economy? Giving to charities for sick children here, while my own county's children are starving to death?
It's wrong to lure people in with false hopes for the government's own interest, and then tell them "sorry... goodbye". It is unacceptable to be put in jail after university and a master's degree and $150000 in taxes and not even a speeding ticket.
