San Ysidro TN renew question

I plan to renew my TN status at San Ysidro border. Just found out they built a new pedestrian crossing Pedwest.

Could somebody share the experience renew or get new TN at San Ysidro poi? I'm really confused about which border crossing should I go. Does pedwest provide the same services as the other one?

Many thank

Yes, PedWest, provides the same service as any Port of Entry. It is a brand new building, opened ~Aug 2017 (I believe), just to handle the volume of pedestrians. (one of the busiest land border crossings in the world).
I was there in Feb 2018, I was on TN status (spouse and child on TD) and we "activated" our H1B status (and H-4) by me bringing my H1B approval notice and we obtained new I-94 cards with the new expiry. You can obtain a new TN status at this facility (you don't renew, you obtain a new TN). We are Canadians living in southern California and we did not want to fly to Canada to activate our H1B (my company would not cover the cost of flights), so we drove to San Ysidro PedWest. (about 1.5 hour drive).

We took I-5 to the last exit before Mexico border, exit Camino De La Plaza, turned right. There are paid parking lots right there, but we went to the outlet mall to park. Outlets at the Border or Las Americas Premium Outlets. It was a Saturday morning and we briefly checked out the outlet shops (my spouse likes to shop). We walked to Virginia Avenue. Google Maps is correct, but Satellite view is outdated (photos out of date). You walk south on Virginia Ave past the bust stop, you see the new Ped West CBP building on your left. There was a steady stream of people leaving the building (walking from Mexico). There is a sign that says "Mexico", but you don't need to actually walk into Mexico. Outside the building there are three lines, one for Sentri pass holders, one for pre-paid I-94 card holders, and the last line for everybody else. In hindsight we should have bought our I-94 card online before we visited (only $6 each). This would have saved us a lot of time as the regular line was long, but the prepaid I-94 line was very short.

Amberleaf, thanks a lot for the input! We are also Canadians living in SoCal. If both entrances provide the same service, I'll still use the original POE as before.

There is only 1 place to apply for a TN at San Ysidro.

In my experience, you must enter Mexico, cross the bridge west, and then walk north to the new building. Present yourself to the officer and they will escort you to the room which Amberleaf talked about.

When I tried to apply for my TN permit 2 weeks before my start date, the officer told me to buy my I-94 and return in 2 weeks for them to process the application. They told me in that instance that I could return through the prepaid I-94 line (without having to cross the border again)

Thank you for the reply grant2. I got my TN last weekend from the old entrance. They are constructing a new port of entry building which will be ready next month. Most officers there are relatively new, at first the office insists I need to go back to Canada to apply. Luckily another officer came and said they can do it there. I was then being escorted to a building next to the vehicle entrance. After a long wait, I was granted TN.

Yes, if you apply at the old building they will walk you over to the new building, so there's no point in going to the old building.

I think you are talking about the pedwest entrance, I went to the other POE which is doing construction. According to the officer, the new building will be in use next month.

Hi All,

I'm mexican and need to change employer within next 15-20 days. Which would be the best option due to the current situation?
