Sailing Permit

Folks,

Yesterday, I obtained the Sailing Permit from my local IRS office.

Filling the Sailing Permit form (Form 2063) is a 5 minute process.

However, since we are now approaching end of January, the lady at the counter asked me to show the proof that I have filed the Income tax returns for the year 2001.

When I said that I still haven\'t received my W-2, she helped me file my Tax returns for 2001 based on the information in the last Pay Stub of 2001(Period Dec 16 - Dec 31). The IRS people say that, later on, when we get the W-2, if there are any changes, we can file an amendment.

However, it\'s a must to file the 2001 returns before they can give us the Sailing Permit.

Hope this information Helps.

Thanks natcam - This info certainly helps many of the Feb/March Cpers

irrespective of consulate...
Thanks for specifying the 2001 tax retun filing requirement as I\'ll go to get Sailing Permit in Jan end...Good Luck.. :)

Do we need a sailing permit?

From what I have seen on this discussion board, it is not a requireed document, it\'s more of a good-to-have document.

need to file 2001 returns

I was told the same - that 2001 return needs to be filed.
natcam - did you have your dividents information (1077 DIV? etc.) with you, or can you amend that with a new application too?
mm123 - I don\'t think its required for CP. From what I know it may be asked for when leaving the country, though I\'ve never heard of such a case

You are right

Its "good" to have a sailing permit, but not an absolute must ! This is because you will be taking the tax transcripts or tax return and W2 with you, which should be enough.

I took my Sailing Permit on January 9th and I was not told the same

Hi
I took my Sailing Permit on January 9th by showing December 22nd(our last pay stub for year 2001) and I was not told that we need to file 2002 Tax Returns in January.
