RTD question

My RTD expired in July and I have a need to travel in July. Can I apply for a new one without surrendering existing one? My plan is to attach a letter explaining them that I still have a valid RTD and since it takes 5 months to get a new one I would like to apply before hand. Do you think they will buy that? Any thoughts on this?

It would never hurt to try that.. But make sure that your current RTD does not expire while you are out of US. Otherwise they can give you serious trouble entering back.
 
I just cannot believe what we have to go through. I know this is a useless unnecessary comment, but COME ON. The words "will they buy that" hit me. There is nothing to buy. It's their own disorganization and inefficiency, and we are supposed to worry about it. CRAP!
 
I applied total for 2 RTS within 5 years and I never sent the old one back. They just issued me a new one. So go ahead and do it. You shouldn't have a problem. Their problem is that they don't even know their own rules.
 
Well, legally speaking, they can't issue you a new RTD, while you still have a valid RTD--unless you return your valid RTD with your application. In other words, you can't have two valid RTDs at the same time. But, we are talking about immigration, they probably won't even notice that and will issue you a new one. But, if you want to follow the rules, you cannot apply for a new RTD, while having a valid RTD in hand.

well i tried to apply for a new one while I had one in hand 2 years ago..they asked me for the OLD rtd..Last year I did the same..They issued me a new one while the OLD rtd was valid but when I got the new one..old one had only 1 week date left..

With immigration you never know..Its wheerver the wind is blowing that day.
 
I'm assuming if your old RTD is not expired they will want it back, but if it is they will isuue you another one. When I applied for second RTD my first one was expired.
 
one question

When are we supposed to send all the supporting documents for the RTD? I applied online for my second one, they send me a receipt letter, but they have'n ask me for any documents as of today. Should I send it anyway?

NO! wait till they ask. They might never ask you for old RTD and issue you a new one. But they do ask for old one, make sure you take out I-94 before sending old RTD to them.

I understand now that I should not send my old RTD, but what about pictures, photocophy of driver's license, copy of 1-94 etc?

hey copper i had the same issue regarding RTD..and i spoke to an immigration officer and he said you should mail it without surrendering your old one unless they ask for it..
