hello everyone -
i am an asylee and have recently travelled to australia for 2 months on RTD. I would like to share with all of you that the reentry via LAX was very smooth and took about 2 minutes. I also need your help on this issue: do asylees need to get advance parole document in addition to RTD - I am confused by the front page of www.uscis.gov. I need to travel next week so any prompt response is greatly appreciated. One more thing - do we or do we not need to renew our EAD. I noticed the fees went up again. They never seem to get enough.

As an asylee, you just need to have the RTD to re-enter the US. Advance Parole is not for asylees. And you don't need to re-new your EAD. Just have a valid RTD with you and you should be fine!

To add to what Gino said , You don't need an EAD but make sure you have a Unrestricted SSN CARD which you can use to show your employment verification along with your Drivers License.

nice people

i can't stress enough how much I appreciate help nice people provide on this forum!
and:)
so my ead will expire on april 21 2005. i am between jobs and will be meeting employers ( i hope:) but would like to save those 175 bucks. is your advise just to get an unrestricted SS card and use it with an ID? is there an official link which says we dont need to renew EADs. THANX again !

Wrong! Wrong! RTD is valid for empllyment eligiblity but you will have HR Go nuts after you cuz it expires in a year. DON"T make that mistake.

JUST SHOW YOUR SSN CARD and DL and be done with it FOREVER. You don't want HR questioning validity cuz they just know black and white!

right right right

The law protects certain individuals from unfair immigration-related employment practices of a U.S. employer, including refusal to employ based on a future expiration date of a current employment authorization document

Expiration dates do not affect current employment, since employers are neither required nor permitted to re-verify the employment authorization of aliens who have presented one of these cards to satisfy I-9 requirements (this is true for conditional residents as well as permanent residents).

espressojoy,

The law protects the immigrant by NOT allowing employers to ask for specific documents BUT the employer has the FULL right to ask for a new document if the one is expired..If someone shows RTD..Its good if its valid..but after 6 months the EMPLOYER HAS full rights to ask for a renewal..thats why they have expiration dates...

My point was by showing RTD as a proof of employment, it makes the EMPLOYER ask for a valid document once the old one expires BY LAW..BY law they have to ask for it...or show another proof of employment..

Just get ur ssn and dont worry about all that..My point was that.

I have changed jobs in the last 5 yrs, Once I showed DL, SS Card with ristriction on it, and RTD as a supporting document, when it was getting expired, HR call me to show them a new one, I told them it was a suporting document, and I told her that will you renew your passport, if you are not travelling. She said nothing and I shut her up. HR never bother me again.
Than I made the new SS Card with no restriction, so this time I showed my DL and SS Card, thats it, Employemt Authorization Card was nothing but a pain in a B---, But now they issue for 5 yrs, thats what the CS dude told me. But there are some jobs, if you are not a citizen, they demand for INS card to prove, than again now things have changed, you can't get a DL now, untill you show your legal paperwork.

Guys, I have a delema. I've just applied for RTD.I received the receipt with receipt day February,28. I was planning to travel to London in the middle of august as a U.S. team member for participation in the world-wide simulation competition. However the uscis.gov says that it take from 240 up to 270 to proceed the application. That means that I'll receive my RTD in October only.Do u think they will proceed my application faster if I send them invitation to participate in the final of the competition with my name on it? Has anyone heard about precidents when people receive their travel documens faster than the INS website states?

They have procedures for requesting expedite treatments. Give it a shot.

I tried and submitted a request to expedite processing of my RTD. I attached a detailed letter from my employer explaining the need "and urgency" for me to travel on company business. The "date last updated" changed on the web page when they received my request but with no status change. It's been over 4 months now and I'm still waiting.
On the other hand, a friend of mine received his RTD in 12 days (he received it last week). He requested expedited processing based on a family emergency.

ssn without restrictions...

hey guys..what is SSN card without restrictions.
mine says on it...for employment only with INS permission.

As long as you have your I-94 with asylum stamp on it and/or asylum approval letter you can go to SS office and apply for ss card without any restrictions.
I had no troubles whatsover applying and received it in two weeks.

Good luck

Is it like a standard procedure or all u should do just to provide some kind of prove, that your trip is an emergency? And do u happen to know what your friend family emergency was?

unrestricted SS# card

hello again -
thanks for the memo! I went to a SS office yesterday to ask for an unrestricted card and the lady over there said in order to issue one she needed to see my asylum granted letter. I took it today and she sid all was fine and that I would receive unrestricted SS card (one which says nothing on it but the regula thing: number and name)in 2 weeks. goodbye EAD! thanks again for your help good folks!:)

There is no specific INS form to request expedite processing of RTD. My friend attached a written request with his RTD application explaining that he needs to visit his sick mother in UK. He also attached a letter from her doctor.
