Firstly I feel really bad about your impending lay-off. Hopefully your employer has the decency to pay a good severance.
This whole GC and economic downturn experience here re-iterates the cold hard fact that "life was never meant to be fair" & "that which does not kill you makes you stronger." Hang in there, keep the Faith and wait for the light at the end of the tunnel!
I have never heard of the employer/lawyer informing the INS of staffing changes. I know that if you join another company, then you must inform INS (per AC21) and prove that the job is "similar" to the one you currently have. Your best bet is to find another opinion from an immigration lawyer (non-company) and ask them for their input. Also, no matter what, try not to burn your bridges with your current employer and look for someone in the legal department/HR that may be sympathetic to your situation.
When the lay-off occurs, make sure that you have in writing immediately that you were layed-off so that after you get your GC, you won\'t be questioned about "intent" etc. when applying for citizenship.
We\'ll all get the GC sometime as long as we have not done anything illegal/unethical. It\'s just an illogical test of patience......
