I am a GC holder with a reentry permit which expires towards the end of July 2006 and am planning to get back to the US about one week before the expiry date for the permit. I had to deal with a family issue for the past 2 years and now i am ready to return for good. I want to know if anyone, who returned to the US with a rentry permit, can share their experience at the POE. what kind of questions were faced and what kind of documents (bank details, taxes etc.) were requested ?

If you applied for a reentry permit to protect your GC, and go back to the US before its expiration date, then you shouldn't have to worry.
The IO may ask why, but you're still safe because of the I131. Same for secondary inspection.
My understanding is that bank statements, rent stubs...are asked when applying for naturalization : to prove that you did not break the continuous residency. However ( unless you had an approved N470 ), it's broken anyway because you were away for > 1year.
You can still bring tax transcripts or anything else : see the italics in my signature : I hope for the best, but I am prepared to face the worst ( for my own sake ).
There are a couple of experinces here about reentry with REP as you are from being the only one to have fears.

Thank you very much for your informative response, Catseyes. I was just nervous about the reentry being so close to the expiry period and didn't know what to expect. Also, I searched and read posts related to the REP but could not find anything on actual POE encounters.
