Hi,
Just wondering abt the reasons and new developments on the EB category... retrogression et all...
Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf coast on August 29, 2005 and thereafter for a few days.
Retrogression news was released on 13th/14th September.
I am not sure if this is a surprise as acc. to what is stated in here http://www.murthy.com/news/n_pridat.html, retrogression for EB3 and EB2 was expected in FY 2005 (ending sept, 30 '05), or latest by Dec 2005 (as per http://www.murthy.com/nflash/nf_081105.html). But, did the EB2 retrogression come a few months earlier than expected...!?!
Here are 2 hypotheses of why retrogression would actually help the US economy. I am wondering which one superseeds the other!
1) By retrogressing the visa number dates, the several people who would have been eligible to work (by obtaining EAD) were kept off the job market. That would create better hopes for people displaced due to Katrina... After Katrina hit, jobless numbers went up. Jobless claims related to Katrina were around 214,000 (http://www.usatoday.com/money/economy/employment/2005-09-22-jobless-katrina_x.htm). 56,000 new jobs were created in October. Would retorgression have helped?
2) By retrogressing and then later charging additional fees for all-that-needs-to-be-done, more revenue could be collected to aid the deficit problem (or more precisely to help Katrina victims).
If 2) is actually true, then the chances of EB numbers being available again are higher?
I don't have anything against the administration, because afterall they have to worry abt the economy. I am just speculating.
Please give ur opinion.
