Resident becoming a citizen.

I have a quick question for you guys hopefully someone can help.
My resident card (greencard) will expire in 2 months.
I'm in the process of looking into the N-400 naturalization program to become a citizen.

My question is a simple one.
Do i have to renew my Greencard and get a new temporary I-94 (to show proof im not a illegal immigrant) and only after i receive my renewed Greencard i apply for the N-400?

Or is there a much easier cost effective way to do this.
By perhaps extending my current resident card or getting a temporary one while my N-400 application goes thru?

Unless you filed the N-400 6 months or more before your green card expired, you will need to renew your green card to have proof of legal status. In addition, at the citizenship interview they will expect you to show an unexpired green card, or at least proof of having applied for renewal, if you didn't meet the 6 month deadline as described above.
