rescheduling N400 interview Orlando

I have a trip booked to visit relatives overseas in January. Yesterday I got my interview letter and of course the appointment is during that time.

I have already searched the forum and it looks like most people think an appointment should not be rescheduled unless it's a life/death situation.

I checked with the airline, and I would loose almost $1200 in penalites to change or cancel this trip.
Would you reschedule the interview? Anybody done this recently in Orlando? How long did you have to wait for a new appointment?

My two cents:

Given the backlog as we have today (and gettting worse everyday), if you ask for reschedule the interview, the chances are you won't get it for another 15 to 18 months. The question that you need to ask for yourself is: Is it worth to you compare the $1200 you might lose? BTW, you can go on eBay to sell your tickets for better deal than deal with airlines.....

hey

i have my interview on january and i cancelled overseas trip and a cancellation fee of
$350 dollars ,worth it even if the airlines takes the whole ticket i dont care
my suggestion will be do not play on fire they have a huge case backlog and you will be the last one,you have come this far wait and enjoy travelling with the prestigious and beautifull us passport.

I am in Orlando also and I have heard you can try to do a walk in. It might be a matter of trying a couple of times and looking really sad and having a good story of course. I know it sounds ridiculous and illogical but this might work. Maybe not the first time, maybe not the second but you might be lucky the third time. If I was you I would try that.

Also, may I ask when you sent in your application and when it was received? I assume you have to show up at the office near the airport, correct?

@King:

Thanks for the suggestion. I might give this a try, but I'm tending towards playing it safe and cancelling my oversees trip.

@Citizentobehz:

I don't think tickets could be resold on eBay. As far as I know it is rarelly possible to change the name on a ticket.

BTW, my application was mailed off Feb 17th 2007, my PD is Feb 26 and I was fingerprinted March 29th for those interested.

Time between Int. notice and Int. Date

Similar issue..

My question is how much time do you get for the interview? I.e. duration between the day you receive the interview notice and the day of the interview. Do you get at least 4 weeks? I want to go out of country for 15 days.
Any update will be greatly appreciated.

Got IL today!!

I have got my IL (postamarked 1/10/08) for 3/4/08!

Now my question is.. Is it OK to leave country for two weeks and come back (I am planning to go from Feb. 5 to Feb 19)?
Please anyone... any concern, suggestion.. I am being little bit paranoid!:confused:

There is nothing that should stop you from making such a small trip. You still have GC that allows you to travel and come back. If you plan to make 6+ month trip after filing N400 but before interview, there could be problem. In this case, there is no problem.

Think about it, before last 1-2 years, N-400 used to take years to process. Do you think people can not leave US at all during those times?

When IO asks you about trips outside of US, tell them that you made one more trip after filing N-400 and the dates and you will be fine

Please let us know your decision how you proceeded.

I decided to play it safe and cancel the trip. Airline (United) charged $200 fee per ticket (x 4 tickets for whole family) to change to a date later this summer but after I explained the circumstances they agreed to issue everyone in my family a $150 travel voucher.

So I'm now ready for my interview which is tomorrow morning. I will post my experience. BTW, does anyone know if Orlando offers same day oath ceremony?
