Rescheduling Interview

My son doing undergraduation at Georgia Tech,Atlanta. His spring 2008 semester final exams starts from April 28 to May 2nd.

We received his Citizenship interview letter last friday and the interview date was APRIL 29 which is conflicting with his final exams.

Also he is going to FRANCE from May 11 th to July 30 for doing his summer semester under study abroad program.

First I thought of writing a letter to USCIS asking to rescheduled the date. But worried if they rescheduled date falls between the days when he is out of country.

Second thought is to take Infopass appointment and explain the situation.

Which is the best way to do. Please advice.

Which state do you reside in?

Can you/your spouse take the interview, and let your son take his later? If that's Ok with you all, then he can request postponment of only his interview date to a later date.

Infopass is a better idea - but if you go with the idea above, your son has to be at the infopass appointment. But you can do his request by writing (instead of infopass).

Myself & my wife already got citizenship last year. We live in nashville,Tennessee and DO office is at Memphis. If I take infopass appointment then I have to drive to Atlanta and need to take my son to Memphis.

Flight Option

Can you not have your son fly from Atlanta to Memphis. Try Delta or Northwest. They both serve nonstop service between these 2 cities. This way you will save the driving time too. Think about it.

Airtran has Atlanta-Memphis (http://www.airtran.com/sale/ATL.aspx?saleID=) on sale for $54 one way.

Anyway, if it is only for your son whose exams are scheduled during that week, you can request an infopass appointment and request postponement to a date (after your son's France trip). See if you can request the infopass appointment in Atlanta, or if it is Memphis, have him fly down using Airtran.

You must be an Indian parent - looking at your idea of driving from Nashville to Atlanta, picking up your 'dear' 'little' son and driving all the to Memphis, driving back to Atlanta to drop him in Atlanta and driving back to Nashville !! For God's sake, the man's flying to France by himself - and you are thinking of babying him here !!

Don't worry, I am Indian too and will probably think on these lines before someone whacks me on the head and stuffs some logic in!! :)

Forget about it

Any one has interview rescheduling experience?

This interview is like once in a lifetime opportunity and you want to reschedule it. I wouldn't go thru that route, it could delay by God knows weeks, months. On the other hand, if you like go ahead & do infopass apptt and have them change it to a new date right there & then. This will assure you that the interview will take place in few weeks and there will be some hope. The choice in the end is yours.

If you don't mind the delay (several months ) involved with rescheduling the interview, then sure go ahead and call USCIS to reschedule it if your son has too much going on. Rescheduling the interview should always be a last option.

Why not ?

i dont think Univ will reschedule an exam, so just resched the interview. And hope for the best.

I don't see why a Univ would not reschedule an exam. Talk to the instructor and if he or she is understanding, due to this special circumstances, may be he or she could have this individual take up a special make up exam in this instructor's office. This is also an option & who wouldn't understand immigration issues in this country. Doesn't hurt to talk & work it out with the instructor. Get this USCIS thing out of the way ASAP.

I agree. I have rescheduled multiple final exams during my undergrad years for less important reasons - such as meetings, business trip (that could have been canceled) etc. Now believe me, citizenship is far more important than all of that and if the interview time on 4/29 is at a reasonable hour - have your son fly in that evening prior and fly out right after his interview. This way he will only impact the exam or exams schedule for 4/29 - usually it isn't more than 2 exams. I am sure the professors will schedule earlier dates for him since he knows about about 2 months in advance.

I am also with everybody here. It should be easier to reschedule the exam than interview. Atleast with exam, you can meet with the professor and explain. He knows you well and can figure out alternatives. With USCIS, you can not meet anybody except window people at infopass (That's is what they are) They have no power to do anything and no incentive to do it either.
If he clears interview, he can get Nat cert same day and easily get US passport and then fly to France in time.
Do not try to reschedule interview !!! Read this board here for delays and problems faced by many people here with USCIS. It is not worth it.

I rescheduled my GC interview twice as it happens. The first time as I was out of the country - the second date I was sent was only a week later so I was still out of the country. Then I sent a letter saying when I would be back, and they rescheduled for a couple of days later. Posting here to see if this was a good idea I got similar replies to what you have - ie. (paraphrasing) "the world would come to an end if I tried to reschedule with USCIS". In the end it worked out fine. Maybe I was just lucky, so I'm not going to recommend you follow my lead, but I'm just sharing my experience with you. :)
