I have been a green card holder for past 7 years, however since I had to continue my education in my native country, I had been staying for 6 months in US and remaining 6 months in my native country for this purpose for 4 years, inbetween I did stay in the USA continiously without breaks for a period of 3 years, I want to know how is the criteria of duration of stay calculated for citizenship? I have been told that to apply for citizenship, I need to have stayed for 5 years in the USA continiously without having travelled or stayed anywhere else ,so since I have been in and out of the USA , and have about 3 years of continious stay, am I ineligble to apply for citizenship? please help, any input is appreciated.

What do you mean by "in between" you stayed in the US for 3 years without breaks? What is your complete travel history?

I mean to stay my period of stay in the USA has been with interim breaks in between, I stayed for an year and half from 2002 to june2004, left the country in june 2004, came back in nov 2004 and stayed till march 2005, after which I again left the country in march and came back in sept 2006, and have stayed till now( nov 2008). pleas elet me know if in order to apply for citizenship I need to have 5 continious years of stay without breaks of travelling?

Us citizenship requirement

Do you need to have stayed in the USA continiously for a period of 5 years without having travellled or left the country or stayed in any other country for the whole period of 5 years to apply for citizenship? If a person has been a permanent resident of USA FOR 7 YEARS, but doesnt have a record of being physicaly present in the USA for a period of 5 continious years, does it make them ineligble to apply for citizenship? please help
thanks

No, you're required to have at least 30 months of physical presence during the statutory period and have kept US residency ties up until the oath date.
