Request help with I-551 renewal

My passport was I-551 stamped in NJ with an expiry date of 10/21/04. I have been working outside the country for the last one year and I will be visiting USA before the I-551 expiry date for a short stay.

What is the application process to apply for I-551 renewal? Should I visit the same INS office in NJ where my passport was originally stamped? What is the address of that office? They allow applicants without appointments only on one day in a week. Is it Thursdays only? What documents should I take with me for the renewal? I would appreciate any information in this regards. Thanks in advance for your help

Did you apply for a re-entry permit? If you have been living and working outside the US for a year and only plan to come back for "a short stay" that could cause some serious questioning and re-entry issues at the POE.

Thanks for your posting. Re-entry should not be a problem. I am re-entering before the expiry date, maintaing a home in USA, paying USA taxes and employer is based in USA.
