Replacing SS card after naturalization. Anybody?

I found the form I need to fill out in order to replace my Soc. Sec. card, but it appears they want me to send the original Citizenship certificate with the application. I don't feel like sending it to them. Is there another way to do it? for example, can I show up at their office in person and for them to see the original documents? has anybody already tried to replace their Soc. Sec. card?

thank you!!!!

Please pardon me for my ignorance. Why do you have to change the SS card? Did you change your name or something in your naturalization process that is requiring you to replace the existing SS card? Appreciate your response.

I need to update the information with the SS office as I'm not a GC holder anymore. Now my SS card states "valid only with work authorization" (or something like this).

Online info regarding Baltimore DO isn't what it is in reality. Read the Baltimore thread.

thank you for advice, I'll try to use walk-in service.

You can use the walkin service at your nearest social security office. It just takes a few minutes to update their database. They will send you a new card with the same number in a couple of weeks.

yes, that is what i exactly did. I went to SS office and changed my name, and status (from PR to US Citizen) right after the oath. (I had everything mapped out.. such as I would change my SS first, then DL, then bank acct, on the same day of my oath)

Huh? That line gets removed when you update your status with a GC. I haven't had that line on my social security card for 5 years, since I became a PR.

Apparently, it seems like there has been confusion here..

When anyone enters the US on valid work visa and gets a SSN card, you will see the conditional status printed on the SSN card. (for e.g. valid for work... and so on)

After getting PR, one can visit the local SSN office, fill out the forms after which
you should have received the SSN card without any conditions stated on it.

I guess the original question was - does one need to have a new SSN card after you become a citizen or does the one which you have while you are a PR, is all you get..

Hope this helps..

Wow, why would you need to change your DL and bank account? NEver heard of that.

I too, had it removed when I got my green card. You shouldn't have to do it after you become a citizen. The SSA does not care about that; only that you have legal work authorization.

It is recommended to notify SSA once you change your status from USPR to USC.
Recommended by who? They do not care as long as you work legally, I doubt that they make care if you are a PR or a US citizen.
