I am personally not aware of any cases where a reentry permit was denied.

I applied for it twice and got it both times with no problems. According to the application instructions, there is no requirement to provide a "proof" for the "reason for leaving the country" when you submit a reentry permit application. I certainly did not supply any such "proof" and no questions were asked. I did give a reason for asking for the permit, of course, but I was not very specific about it.

Seems there were few cases denied for REP .
Some of the reasons for denial were (as far known ):
1)Application filed after departure of US.(many issues related to this) .
2)Application recieved at Service center was after departure(US) date of applicant.
3)The date of application is just before the date LPR.
4)No refugee/asylum status continued before the application.
5)Failed to apply for removal of conditions.
6)Not enclosed proper photos !
7)application not signed by the applicants!

So can we apply for reentry permit after leaving country. For example, first I go to my country for 3 months and then apply for reentry permit.

Generally, how much time does it take to process reentry permit application? How soon can we get the permit?

No, you cannot apply for a reentry permit from abroad. You must be present in the U.S. when the application for a reentry permit is submitted. However, you do not need to wait in the U.S. untill such an application is approved. You may also request that your reentry permit, when approved, be sent to a U.S. consulate abroad.

The last time I applied for a reentry permit was in August 2004 and it was approved in the end of January 2005. So it took about a little under 6 months.

Hi Baikal3,
Thanks for the information.

Can we apply for reentry permit one week before leaving country? How long do we need to wait in US after we apply for it?

Technically, I think you can leave right away after filing an application for an REP. However, I agree with JoeF that it is better to wait for a receipt and a case number, if you apply using a paper version of form I-131.

You can also file I-131 electronically. That way you get both a receipt notice and a case number electronically right away, at the moment of e-filing. (That's what I did last year). You'll then have to mail in an extra letter with the supporting documents (GC copy, etc), but that can also be done immediately after e-filing.

This is from DOS web site.

A permanent resident alien who intends to remain abroad for more than a year should, at least 30 days prior to the proposed date of departure, apply while in the United States to the U.S. Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services in the Department of Homeland Security for Reentry Permit. The permit is valid for two years and may not be extended.
