Renewing Greencard while in abroad

Hi,

I've had my Greencard since 2002 and it will expire in January 2012. I'm planning to live abroad for one year starting from March 2011, which means by the time I come back to the US in April 2012 my Greencard will be expired.

I understand that you can acquire a re-entry permit if you will be away for more than 6 months, but is it possible to renew my Greencard while I'm in abroad? What would be the best way to handle this? If you have any suggestions i'll really really appreciate it. Thank you!

Really? In 3 years you did not apply for citizenship yet. You can apply for citizenship after being a resident for 5 years.I think now they do not renew the 10 year green card anymore, you have to apply for citizenship. Isn't it easier to get the citizenship and than live outside the country for how much you want without needing a re-entry permit.

You can renew...you are not obligated to become a citizen , but you can't renew from outside the country...remember it is not a visa it is a GC which means they expect you to live here and pay taxes and contribute to this country...they can refuse you to enter and you can read on some website that it happened to some people or they got the warning that in the future they can not be allowed back in ....it is not something that happens a lot but GC holders have rules to stick to.
 
I'm a Japanese citizen and Japanese government doesn't allow dual citizenship, so that is the reason why I haven't gotten the US citizenship.

What about this scenario? I leave US after acquiring re-entry permit. Then while I'm in abroad I apply for renewal of Greencard and I simply come back for finger print appointment? Would this work?

Yes, you can fie for a GC renewal even online, and then come to US for FP appointment. Usually after you file yout get a FP appointment within a month.
 
Don't confuse the OP...the answer on her question is "NO" ...the Op can't renew from outside the country since for the renewal you have to be in the US....perhaps an appointment can made from outside the country, but not the renwal it self.
