Renewal of TN - maximum number of times

I understand that there is no maximum number of renewals under the TN visa, but does anyone have practical experience with longer stays?

I have been on a TN visa for 4 years now (3 different applications). My most recent application was a request for 3 years and I was only approved for 6 months. A bit concerned I may have a hard time the next time I attempt to renew. Any similar experiences?

Did the officer offer any explanation as to why he was only giving you 6 months on a 3 year offer?

In 2018 I received a 1-year permit on a 3-year application.

Explanation: "We want you to come back every year to make sure you're still working for the company."

It makes no sense and seems contrary to DHS policy, but at the time no one wants to argue with the officer who's deciding their fate....

Since then I've been given two 3-year permits.
