Renew Greencard or Apply for Citizenship

Hi! My husband's GC will expire in August 2015 and I was wondering if we could apply directly for his citizenship. We married in Sept 2012, we applied for his GC May 2013, he obtained the GC in August 2013. I am a Citizen.

Your husband has only been a permanent resident for two years. Normally, at least three years are required to apply for citizenship.

Also, a green card expiring after two years is not a "renewal". You have to petition for removal of conditions, which is a much more complicated process. Failure to remove conditions invalidates your husband's green card and permanent resident status!
 
As Harry said, the conditions have to be lifted and his green card converted to a full 10-year one (i.e. renewal in your case). After another year of being married and being a permanent resident, he can apply for citizenship.
