Relinquish US Citizenship

I have a friend who wants to contest in Indian elections. However he is a US Citizen. What does he have to do to become eligible to contest in Indian politics? What would be an approx time frame?
 
He can apply for Full Indian Citizenship.

Once he gets it, it will automatically make his US citizenship invalid..

No. There is nothing that automatically invalidates US citizenship. US citizenship must be explicitly and officially revoked, either voluntarily by the person holding the citizenship, or involuntarily by the US government revoking it in a US Federal court.

The Indian government can't take away his US citizenship, but they can require him to officially renounce his US citizenship before granting him Indian citizenship.

He can't simply get Indian citizenship right away. He has to first go back to India and there is some sort of waiting period before he can apply (It is 5 years after living in India with OCI card and more in other circumstances).
 
I think you have to have been an OCI for 5 years and lived in India for 1 of those 5 years, yes.
