Reentry Permit

Hi,

I am a DV2006 winner and I am planning to enter US on my green card just to activate it. How long is the minimum period of time I need to stay in order to keep my GC. Also, I need to return to my country of origin and stay there to take care of my old father for about an year or two. Can I apply for reentry permit and if I can how does it work. Will I have time to do it since I am staying only for a short time in USA before I go back?

Any help is greately appreciated.

Thanks

Hi, You can Just enter the US and apply for SSN and Drivers license and after you received them you can get back to your country , But don't stay there more than 6 months , if you are planning to stay there more than 6 months you must filled re entry permit form. also check http://www.visa-talk.com/search.php?searchid=183

I have a similar question in that I am a DV2006 winner and have an immigrant visa stamp in my passport (which expires in July) and sealed packages to present to the INS officer on arrival, do one of those contain the actual Green Card?

I am intending to go to the US for 2 weeks to activate the Green Card and then return to complete the sale of my house (already on the market) and get my stuff shipped.

How long does it take to get the actual LPR (Green Card) and Social Security number? I aim to back in the US within a month after returning.

Thanks.

No, the sealed enveloppe does not contain the real GC. It contains papers that will be sent to a processing, which will then send your plastic card.
The officer will tell you that it can take up to about 10months to get the plastic card.
My husband and I received received ours within 4weeks. From what I've heard so far, it's what most people experience. However, there are also some cases which take more time.

Same for SSN : you could go to an office and fill out the paperwork. Unfortunately, it may take some time for your info to be entered into the system ( by the INS/USCIS ).

Depending on the State where you intend to live, you might be able to convert your driving license. But in some states, you have to take all the tests again.
