Reentry permit can it be used above two years?

I have a question based on what I understood from my conversation with relative.

The family applied for Reentry permit, then left (on those days FP was not required). they left in sept 07. since reentry permit processing take time, that was processed in March 08 and they got reentry permit approved. since it was processed in March 08 it was indicating valid for reentry upto say March 2010.

Now since they left in sept 07 and they come back in March 2010 ( just before date indicated in their approval for Renenty permit) their official sty out of country is above two years.

so does they are allowed to stay out of US on reentry permit above two years? Or when they come back in March 2010 they will be denied entry because renentry permit can be valid for max two years?

they shd be in the country(USA) b4 the RP expires.

It can be used until it expires. Even if the total time spent outside the US is more than two years due to the delay of USCIS approving it.

can we clarify and is there any uscis memo on this issue?
