Dear All,
My wife and myself had recieved the interview letter (for US citizenship). One of the requirement states that we provide any evidence of selective service registrtaion. I was on student visa when I was 26 yrs or younger. I am not sure why I am asked to provide this document. I got my GC when I was in my 30s. And my wife is not required to register for selective service. Any advice will be appreciiated on this. Thanks...

Please read the check list carefully again. You need to bring documents for only those things that applies to you or your wife. If you are in non-immigrant status until 27 yrs. age, it doesn't apply to you. You need to tell the same during interview if asked for. Tell the IO that you became a GC holder at the age of 30 yrs. and you were in non-immigration visa status before that.

interview letter

Thanks for the reply.. I read the checklist again. The evidence for selective service registration falls under "must bring" list. I am not sure if I have all the old I-20s, but I do have my old passports. I was wondering if this is part of a routine list they normally ask for from all applicants.

Yes, this a routine. Ignore this as it doesn't apply to you. (I was in the same situation).
Take your old passports with you (don't worry about your I-20). F1/H1 are non-immigrant visa categories and holders of these visas are not required to register for selective services.

Cool .... so basically you need nothing for Selective Services if you became a GC after the 27th birthday? I became one at 35.

howlongmore: Were you asked to provide evidence of Selective Service registration in your interview letter?

If you are past your 31st birthday when applying for naturalization (regardless of when you got the GC), you don't need it.

Applicants Over 31 Years of Age

Failure to register for Selective Service will generally not prevent a man who was over 31 years of age on the day he filed his naturalization application from demonstrating that he is eligible for naturalization. Even if the applicant was required to register and the applicant's failure to register was knowing and willful, the failure occurred outside of the statutory period during which the applicant is required to establish his attachment to the good order and happiness of the United States. The INS may, of course, consider a person's conduct before the beginning of this period. INA § 101(f) (last sentence) and § 316(e). If the INS denies naturalization to a man who is at least 31, based on his failure to register with Selective Service, the decision must state explicitly the basis for finding that the failure to register warrants denial of naturalization. As a practical matter, a male applicant over 31 years of age who failed to register with Selective Service should, ordinarily, be found eligible for naturalization unless INS has other evidence, in addition to the past failure to register, that demonstrates that the applicant is not well disposed to the good order and happiness of the United States.

Yes, it's there. But I think this letter is generic. The checklist is clearer, and I should not require a SS letter.
