Recently married abroad and what's next for wife's GC

Guys,

Just talked with some Attorney. He said if one got married before he gets his greencard, one can bring his wife to USA in 9-12 months by filing her petition after getting GC. Otherwise, if one gets married after getting his GC, then he has to apply for a relative petition which takes about 5-6 years. Is this true for asylee as well?

Any idea.....
 
No they are not. The relevant date for asylees is the asylum grant date, not green card approval date. If you are married to your spouse on the date of asylum approval, then s/he also is eligible for asylum and can apply for a green card as an asylee.

For Asylees if one is married at the time when asylum is granted then their family is awarded derivative asylum and they can file for permanent residence along with the principal applicant.

However if the person has been granted asylum and he/she decides to marry then they can not sponsor the spouse until his/her adjustment process to permanent residence is complete. Then and only then they can apply to sponsor the spouse but ofcourse since the application is on basis of permanent resident status it can take further 7-8 years according to current timeline.....
