We took the citizenship oath about a month back, applied for US passports
for myslef, my wife & my minor daughter and received all the three
passports. We had attached our daughter's green card along with
her application form. To my surprise, they have sent us back her
green card. Is this normal ? I thought they are supposed to take back
the green card.

- Thanks

What would the passport agency do with the GC? They are not CIS.
Just keep it as souvenir.

do we suppose to keep the greencard (even for minor) after become a US citizen?

Children's citizenship question

Hello Veeru,
Did you have to fill a N-600 for your minor kids citizenship ? Can you please tell me how did you include your kids ?
Thanks for any info which will help,
Ysu

We didn't file N-600 for my child. You can directly apply for child's passport if atleast one of the parents is a US citizen. We sent all 3 passport applications together and the post office guy specifically told us that the passport agency will take back child's green card (proably they might send it to INS). I can keep it as a souvenir but I am wondering whether they did it by mistake and whether I should return it to INS.

All US citizens should never carry/ have green card in their possesion. On a sworn statement it is very well written if you have lost your green card you should abide by the law and return to the CIS when you track it down and they will take it off the system. On your case you have to return your kid's or they will ask for them when trying to enter USA from abroad. I know this from the officer who interviewed me in Boston last month. Furthermore you should never have two travel documents issued by CIS at the same time. just take the green card to your local CIS office ]
be adviced

Hello Veeru,

Could you tell me how long it took for your kid's passport and what was the procedure? Appreciate your sharing the experience..

Yes, I know that they send back the GC with a child's passport as other posters have reported the same thing. I applied recently for passports and I submitted my kids' GC's with their passport applications. The person at USPS who accepted our applications told me that the kids' GC's would not be returned. However, I emailed the US Dept of State to ask them and was told that they would be returned. So we'll see.

My thinking on this is as follows...

The GC is returned because the child does not have a Certificate of Citizenship yet. If a passport is lost and the child does not have a Certificate of Citizenship, then the child needs a parent's Certificate of Naturalization *and* proof of the child's permanent resident status (i.e. a GC) to prove US citizenship. So I think that's why the GC was sent back. If you ever apply for a Certificate of Citizenship for the child, I suspect the child's GC will be kept during that application process.

Again, just my opinion.
