Yes, I would suggest any new comers to work for a consulting company before they get GC. Being a contractor, you can change client and still get GC. Also, consulting companies usually understand immigration issue better than other companies.

My first 3 year in US was totally wasted because I worked as an employee for a company which is accuired by another company which is accuired by another company which screwed my GC.

On the other hand, my friends who worked a contractor all get GC and now they are employees of some decent company.

friendcool, same as my case. I was fulltime employee for 4 years, company got acquired by one company and then a third company acquired and screwed my GC. Guess we both were not acquired by the same company.
Yes, if you have good skills and smart, the best option is to choose a good consulting company and work on %age as getting contractual jobs might not always be an issue.

I am thinking about working towards creating this kind of awareness among people so that they dont get depressed by the fact that they are stuck. Nowadays people do h1b transfers during extensions also as labors are stuck in BEC, the situation can be used to our advantage and have the ability to switch companies and move on and build their salaries and experience.
