Yes, I would suggest any new comers to work for a consulting company before they get GC. Being a contractor, you can change client and still get GC. Also, consulting companies usually understand immigration issue better than other companies.
My first 3 year in US was totally wasted because I worked as an employee for a company which is accuired by another company which is accuired by another company which screwed my GC.
On the other hand, my friends who worked a contractor all get GC and now they are employees of some decent company.
