Its been long time due

I think its a right thing being done to safe guard the economy but I know its a bad thing for foreign ITES services....

so much for the free economy!

They are harming themselves by these restrictions.

Most good companies have offices abroad. So this wont be a big problem.

Protectionism is not very different from communism! Hopefully they realize that! The same senator may be driving a Toyota or a Lexus much like all the high-tech programmers who want to keep jobs in America! Hypocrites! :D

Free Economy doesnt mean bad service!!!

Imagine you sitting in India and a Vietnemese or someonelese answering your tel bill/bank account queries

Thats how americans feel about someonelse answering their questins I think in my opnion INDIA should stick to what id does best in HIGH TECH-Software development and consulting or may be Management consulting (End to end ) and stop there

The more they try to diversify the more difficult for them to concentrate on their core business.Infact in the process trying to get the customer tuned to their core business the Indian IT industry is forgettng its core Area of NICHE

MY 2 cents

See you got to uderstand this

It is business whihc drives. If the business in US sees an opportunity they will grab that. You cannot stop that. Remember one world economy - America dream. This is purely double standards. When all is going well no one talk about it. Everything is hunky-dory. Shit hits the fan when things fall apart. All or most of these people are the ones who were talking about American economy and spreading the wings. So you got to understand. These thingd are always there. Hawks win sometimes. You got to take that in your stride. But I agree this is a perception problem.

That was below the belt man  ! I am from ATL :-)

Well I dont mind if the vietnamese can do the job. So we ourselves have prejudice against other races and we call the others as racists???

People who have been fortunate enough to be here should also think about other fellow countrymen who werent so fortunate. If they can do a good job, they too should be able to make more money.

How come foreign people here feel that jobs have to be kept in America? How many desi/other people who feel this policy is correct drive an american car? This is like some Jayashree in California who wants H1b's to be restricted cuz she couldnt find a high-paying job!

Indians are fully capable of doing many things. I think a country that has the resources should try to get as much out of it as possible.

This trend cannot be stopped. It is needed to maintain the profitability of the companies. Are they going to stop using MS Windows because MS has development center in India. This is just one example.

Same thing happenned in manufacturing sector. Manufacturing industry slowly moved out because of cost considerations. Samething with IT.

India has a vast pool of talented and hardworking people good in English. I am sure they will do a good job. IT is only a stepping stone for diverifying into other areas.

Companies have core line of business, but not countries. India is a country. There can be companies that specialise in HIGH TECH development. There can also be companies that specialise in other areas -viz. Automobile, Steel, Oil etc. - and that includes IT call centers.

Placing restrictions on business is simply double standard.

be practical guys

See it doesn't make a business sense to me in order to keep customers to have served from someone faroff who doesnt know the nust and bolts of the company he is serving for .

I myself would not be a customer to a company that think customers service can be thought of as a cost cutting measure .

Being patriotic is different and having business sense is different.

I did not mean to say India is not capable of doing good things it doesnt make a good busines strategy wise to have call centers in offshore be it india or anywhere thats all is my point....

Developing software is like creating the process no feeelings involved but call center is like more of feeling and less of logic so it needs a human touch

I am not saying this because I wil have more oppurtunities here it takes unbiased view to get to what I am trying to say

SVSS

Are you in some night B-school and taking marketing and strategy course? LOL

Why do you assume people in India cannot solve problems? All you do is search the support database and give solutions. Thats ideal for an offshore model. Designing is the mostl difficult part to co-ordiante across global teams. If India can overcome that hurdle it definitely can with support!

Even McKinsey has call centers elsewhere. Are you suggesting that they dont know about strategy????

WELL

McKinsey is not the king of strategy makers and to view these kind of points one need not be in any B-Schools

Common sense and the imagination to look into the future(Clairvoyance) is required (I KNOW MANY MAY LAUGH ON THIS)

Its too early to judge the real impact of having call centers

Its only Euphoria now similar to what the dot com boom was .

I bet Call center concept at offshore level be it India/China/Philipines etc is bound to meet its death point in 2-3 years .

Lets be patient MR PATIENCEGC

BTW,

Call centers are not limited to Software/Hardware or product support, There are many other areas-
Airline reservations,
Insurance,
Medical,
Utility billings
Any help on the phone, there are many call centers in India which are not related to IT,
For the cost reason it is good for business to have these call answered from a cheaper place.
All you need is english speaking people with a good attitude and a terminal in front of them.

Well, seems that svss is making too many predictions into the future and has too much common sense.

As patienceGC said that call-center support can absolutely be handled with off-shore model.

U either r not looking around or moving around with closed eyes.

In 2-3 yrs BPO will not fail it will be booming with success like offshore IDC's.

Sample examples: GE, United Online, HSBC, Citibank etc have call centers in India and they are moving more and more to cheaper places.

If complex jobs like software development can move offshore then call-center work is nothing.

If u work in a call-center, u will know how they work and why it makes sense for US companies to move it off-shore.

Hey Patient GC

What is ATL (looking for the full name).
See I have been in country for a while now. In my limited experience I have seen that India has done some good things and some bad. Again unless you try you will not know if we can do it right ? The point is, we cannot restrict to ourselves jsut to S/W development projects. The competition is catching up. This is not different from 2 companies bidding for a project. Look at it at a macro level. You blink you loose. Youy Snooze and you loose. So, this is being driven by NASSCOM, business in US and organizations like that. There is always a reason behind everything. There is a purpose. Look at it this way. If india does not veture into any of this , right behing India are China and Russia. Considering the political and general relation whic US had with these 3 countries in context (India, China, Russia), what would US want to side with. May be it is not completely lunacy o say, that US is little more cofortable to push India for reasons known to all of us. Again may this is a wrong assumption. Let us debate
