Re: Real ID - Letter I am writing

This might be IT fellow asylees; this week (or sooner rather than later) a vote might be deciding a lot of things concerning immigration matters that most of you are aware. Bellow is a letter I am finally writing to senators. I did not write before because I didn't know exactly how to express what I really feel about this anti-immigrant bill - almost all, if not all, respected newspapers and human rights organizations oppose the bill, and so do I. I DO WANT THE ASYLEE CAPS REMOVED.

I do think there is still a small chance (a chance nevertheless) that we might be able to do something positive about it - for those of us that oppose the bill but want the cap removal. It is also a chance, at least, to keep the subject alive no matter what; even if cap removal is not passed because the bill as a whole is too controversial.

I know it is a bit late to be writing to senators, but I believe it is still not that late to express yourself. It is actually good that they keep hearing our opinions until the last minute. I would love to hear opinions from you guys. I just ask you to be respectful when you write. It is very easy to hide behind the anonymity web forums can provide. PLEASE DON’T FORGET WE ALL ARE HUMAN BEINGS. Letter is in the next “reply”. You can use it as a model, if you like, but please change and personalize it.

Here it is the letter

Dear Senator X,

I am writing for you to beg your attention to one matter. Although I do not support the Real Id bill as it is, there is a part of this bill that is so needed to pass that I would really ask you to consider keeping this important part and passing it with the Appropriation bill – or whichever way possible. It concerns the removal of caps for asylees to adjust to permanent legal residency that is now attached to the Real Id bill – I supplicate that you vote to eliminate the removal of such caps.

I hope all of (or a majority of) you, senators, can see that, what I am now asking is a reasonable and doable request. It concerns legal immigrants of this great country. We (I am one asylee from South America) pay taxes, volunteer, work like many other legal residents and citizens of this country; however, we live in limbo for our status is not completely permanent. It takes approximately a decade to become a permanent resident after we apply to change our status from asylees to permanent residents. This wait means that we can only become U.S. citizens, in approximately 15 years. Keeping the caps (mentioned above) will only make the waiting period to become permanent residents and U.S. citizens progressively higher and higher. This can mean that in a few years, asylees (legal residents of this great country) will have to wait, 20 years to become citizens if nothing is changed. With all due respect, it seems unfair to be waiting such a long time to realize our American Dream. Most people in this country are descendants of immigrants. Again, with all due respect, I really hope you still remember that. I wish that you could see us, asylees/legal immigrants, as a member of your family that immigrated here a long time ago. I have cried so many times with the image of the Statue of Liberty in my mind, and what it represents to all of us. I want you to know that feel extremely blessed that this country has given me a second chance to live, and it is with that in mind that I respectfully ask you to consider the removal of the caps now that there is an opportunity to do so. I would really appreciate anything that you can do to eliminate the caps.

Sincerely,

Signature and name

Henri, do u know for sure that they've struck out the cap removal? Nobody has posted the link!

not sure - time will tell

It is up in the air. From I understood, they might be voting on real id bill Hr418(which probably still includes caps removal) separately from the appropriation bill hr 1268. Then I read on cnn (April 15th 2005 report titled Senate Strikes Deal on Immigration Issues) that the deal to vote bills together might be back together again. Frankly, it seems that the newspapers don't understand a bit immigration law and end by giving some misinformation.

In short, I also don't know. Time will tell
 :)

sent a bunch of faxes to senators

I sent about 15 faxes to different senators - not only the ones that take care of "my" state (CA). I did modified the letter above a bit
