Hi all,

I am permanent US resident.
Going to Canada for 2 yrs for fellowship.
Will be trvelling back to US every 3-6 months for continuous presence requirement.
Just wondering if reentry permit necessary.
Please advise. Any suggestions welcome.

I don't think you need a re-entry permit, if you are visiting that frequently and keeping (in theory) your permenent residence in the US.

As you are staying out of country more than one year, it's a good idea to apply for re-entry permit, even if you plan to visit frequently in USA. "Visiting" frequently is not enough to prove residency.

re entry permit

Guys, Thanks for replying.

Well again conflicting answers. I guess best would be to apply for one.
But as long as I visit usa frequently ( 3-6 months), does the clock keep ticking for naturalization purposes.

Thanks for the suggestions.

That goes to the basic definition of "residency". If you are resident, then why are you "visiting" anyway (or using the word "visiting")? Visiting once or more in a year can keep you on track on continuous residency requirement for naturalization, but it still does not address the issue of abandonment of your US residency (i.e. PR status). They are two different issues. If you try to mix these two issues, you will get confused and get conflicting answers.
If you are not living in USA more than a year, it's safer to obtain re-entry permit (and it has nothing to do with the continuous residency requirement of naturalization).

Apply for REP on your own?

Just a related point: Is it permissible to apply for the re-entry permit on your own? Or does an employer need to apply for it on your behalf?

Thanks.

---Your employer has nothing to do with it. It will be filed on your own. It is advisable that you should include these package while filing for the permit.

1. Form I-131
2. Two photographs, and I think its like $80 filing fees (not sure about the cost, it could be more than that).
3. Xerox copy for you GC

Also make sure the above package should be mailed to NSC.
