Dear member,

I have read all the threads reagarding RTD and Re-entry permit and am still comfused ( too dumb , i guess). Ok, here are my questions, if anyone can help me at any degree, I would really appreciate!!!!
1) short trip ( less than half year ): RTD with GC should be enough, right?
2) longer trip ( more than half year, or more than one year per trip): re-entry permit + GC should enough, do not need RTD for extra, right?
3) Can I still use my Re-entry permit + GC for my short trip( let's say two month)as well? Or Do I have to have RTD seperately for short trip?
4) If Re-entry permit+ GC are good for any kind of trip, that means we just need to apply Re-entry permis once for all ( two years).

Help me if you can, i have never traveled outside of the States since I am here.
God bless all of us!!

Hi -

OK... you shouldn't be confused. RTD and Re-entry permit are essentially the same thing - they are both travel documents.

RTDs are available only to refugees and asylees or persons who have their GC but as a direct result of having been a refugee or asylee. This is just because refugees and asylees are stateless and need a refugee travel document per Geneva Convention.

Now, for GC holders, there is the re-entry permit which serves two purposes:
1. It allows a GC holder to stay outside the USA for upto 2 years without loosing their residency status. This is regardless of how the person got their GC.
2. It is a travel document for a GC holder that is stateless or is unable to obtain/renew their national passport.

So to answer your questions. Yes you may use a re-entry permit as a regular passport and make short trips if you like. Having a re-entry permit does not mean you are intending to be outside the USA for a long trip.

In fact this is what I just applied for since it is more economical. Makes no sense to me to keep applying for the RTD.
