Re-entry concern

Hi,
I have a somewhat complex problem, but any help with any part of it will be much appreciated.
I have been studying in the US as a student (J1 visa), and now wish to travel beyond the date my student visa allows me to do this. In order to do this, I ordered and received a B1 Tourist visa last year at the same time I got my J1 visa. To change my visa status I need to leave the country and re-enter on the new visa.
This is where it gets complicated.
I tried to do this at Niagara Falls, however I didn't have the correct paperwork when I came back through immigration (I only had photocopies of the SEVIS receipt and and DS-2019 forms). As my flights at that time were within the period of stay on my J1 visa, and I thought I had lost the paperwork, the immigration officer said that I should not leave the USA before returning home, and would only allow me back in on my original J1 visa.
I have since found all of my paperwork and would like to extend my stay by going to Canada for a night and returning using the B1 Tourist visa I have. My concern is this: when I go to re-enter the USA, will immigration have a record of my previous departure in which I gave them a final date for leaving the USA that has now changed? Do you think this will be a problem, even though I have now found all of my correct paperwork?
As I said, any help will be much appreciated.

There is only one way to find out for sure.
