Re-entry and travel from Canada

Hi everyone and the experts ... got a question.

I am a Canadian citizen got my green card dec 2007.
Got a re entry permit (personal reasons) in Jul 2008 valid till Jul 2010. I have travelled by air to US on my reentry wihout any hassles. My question is... I still own the car I had in Canada with Canadian license plates. I plan to drive down to the US in Christmas. My concern is

1. Is it ok to travel to the usa (my residence now) in my car with cdn license plates? Personally..I dont think it should be a problem to own a car in Canada while living here temp on re-entry permit. I have maintained ties to US and shall be moving permanently in Jul 2010 . Any thoughts would be appreciated.

2. Would I have a problem with POE having cdn licensed car?

Thanks

Do you have an adress in canada. If not, then your plates are either expired or will in 30/60 days. Also, you need to make sure your insurance is based on where you sleep.

And the state you are now living in (even living temporarily -- unless a student -- usually means both getting DL and plating car there) likely requires plating.

Aside from that, you can bring a Cdn plated car temporarily (less than a year).

But you are dealing with FOUR different issues: 1. Provincial rules on plating while residing outside the country; 2.Federal rules on temporary importation; 3. State rules on plating while resident there; and 4. Insuarnce rules.

You need to meet the requirements of each, or you are liable.

Hi nelsona...

Actually I am not transferring the car to usa. I am just going to usa for a week around christmas. Since I have a re entry permit...I am temp in cda
for 2 yrs but still own the car that has cdn plates.
I still have an address in canada.
Thanks

Yes I have an address in USA. I am in CDA right now. Still have the old car with CDN plates. I dont think it would be a problem since I am here temporarily .

Which is it, you said at first "Is it ok to travel to the usa (my residence now) in my car with cdn license plates". This told me you live in US and are visiting canada.

Now you say you are "going to usa for a week around christmas".

So you are merely a cdn resident (ie a person living in Canada) driving to US for a week. Why would this be a problem?

So long as you maintain your Cdn address and Cdn insuarnce, you are covered.
