Recently I have seen a lot of cases transfered to local office. My case was transfered to NYC local INS office on Dec. 24.
I have the following questions for people with similar experience. First, how long will it take to get an interview letter from NYC office? Second, what do we need to bring for the interview? Do I need to hire a lawyer? Third, what are the possible reasons for transfer? Could the reason be that INS tries to get rid of all the backlogs due to the reorganization?
My information: EB2-NY, RD: 10/12/2001, ND: 11/30/2001, FD: 1/30/2002, TD: 12/24/2002.
I hope we can keep this thread alive and exchange our informations for the recent transfer cases.

there is a thread in this board

for NY transfer cases. Generally speaking an NY transfer case is a very bad scenario you want to see. I wish you good luck.

Was yours a national interest waiver case?

I have observed that interview wait for NYC is 6 to 12 months, 8 months being typical. If your case is not complicated, lawyer may not be necessary. However, for self-assurance, you can hire one.

Many local transfers are just random transfers - no reasons at all (they call them "quality control"). Other reasons (in random order) for local transfer can be change in job/addresses, problems with medicals (positive for TB, HIV, etc., then for proof of treatment; incomplete vaccinations), multiple alien numbers on record, problems with finger prints despite more than twice FPs, FBI/CIA hit (name match with their record), incomplete response to RFE/NOID, different postal addresses of spouse and principal applicants, incomplete information to verify legal US visa status history, etc. etc.

Mostly, interviews are not troublesome and people are approved without much of a problem. However, sometimes they do issue RFE during interview (somebody in past reported this kind of RFE on this forum). Few lucky petitioners get approval letters instead of interview letter after local transfers, too. The interview letter specifies types of documents to bring during interview - better to take all relevant documents though.

Best wishes,

Jigesh
