Qutting job after 6 months....Is it OK?

Hello,

Three questions:

1) I am thinking of quitting job all-together after 6 months of getting GC - and do independent contracting work? Would this be OK for citizenship purposes or GC renewal at a later stage?

2) I got my GC approved as of 12/18/06 being the primary applicant. My wife got her's approved 03/05/07. So these 6 months after which I am planning to quit job - does it start from 12/18/06 when I got my GC or from 03/05/07 when my wife got GC?

3) For tax purposes do I need to get my status changed on SSN before filing taxes for 2006? Can't I just file for taxes and worry about changing status on SSN at a later date?

Thanks

That should be fine.

I got my GC approved as of 12/18/06 being the primary applicant. My wife got her's approved 03/05/07. So these 6 months after which I am planning to quit job - does it start from 12/18/06 when I got my GC or from 03/05/07 when my wife got GC?

From when you got your GC. Any derivative GCs are irrelevant. Your wife could be using FTJ and not follow for a dozen years, hypothetically, and you wouldn't be bound to your employer for the simple reason that she got her GC based on her relationship to you, not to your employer.

For tax purposes do I need to get my status changed on SSN before filing taxes for 2006? Can't I just file for taxes and worry about changing status on SSN at a later date?

Your permanent residency status in SSA's database (or anyone else's) has zero effect on your taxes.
